Scotland ITINERARY

The next photographic tuition holiday in Scotland is 1st - 5th October 2018 (Five nights).

If you’re keen to explore the Scottish Highlands, historic castles and discover the wonders of the Isle of Skye, then my 5 night Photographic Tuition Holiday in Scotland is for you. We will discover the 'Highland capital’, the compact city of Inverness, which is a perfect base for exploration by foot. Situated close to the River Ness, we will be in a great position to explore the Highlands.

The Isle of Skye is truly enchanting, release your inner adventurer and discover its mountain ranges, miles of dramatic coastline and captivating history. It has some of the most magnificent scenery and geological features, such as the Old Man of Storr. Be sure to bring your walking boots and explore these unique sights on foot for the real rewards. One of the main attractions which entices visitors from all over the world are the Fairy Pools in Glen Brittle, here you will be able to take some fantastic photos. Old Man of Storr is another captivating part of the Isle of Skye. We will discover this by following the path of one of the most famous walks in Scotland. The ‘Old Man’ is a large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around. The Storr was created by a massive ancient landslide, leaving one of the most photographed landscapes in the world. Close by, we will discover one of the most iconic images of the Scottish Highlands, the Eilean Donan Castle. Situated on an island at the point where three great Sea Lochs meet, set out into the sea and surrounded by some mind-blowing scenery. It also featured in the late 1980's film 'The Highlander'.

Heading south towards Cairngorms National Park, we will visit Carrbridge Old Packhorse Bridge, an ancient bridge across the River Dulnain built in 1717. The bridge was built to allow funeral processions to access Duthil Church, the bridge was known locally as ‘The Coffin Bridge’. There is a viewing area at street level above the bridge and steps down the bank of the river to a lower viewing platform at almost water level. This will allow us to travel back in time and take some great photos.

Please note, this itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions.

Day One

When booking your travel to Inverness, look into flying into Inverness as flights can work out cheaper than train travelhttps://www.easyjet.com/en. I will pick you up from Inverness Railway Station, or Inverness Airport. The plan would be to stay in a Premier Inn ( Premier Inn Inverness Centre, Millburn Rd, Inverness IV2 3QX ) in the city of Inverness for 2 nights. Depending on the time that you all arrive, I plan on giving a quick talk on the basics of photography so that we can get to know each other and practise our Photoshop skills. If everybody arrives by the late afternoon, we will do some night photography on The River Ness.

Day Two

Today we will be heading north towards Golspie, where we will come across Dunrobin Castle, the largest castle in the northern Highlands. The Dunrobin Gardens are spectacular and the inside of the castle is beautifully decorated with original furnishings and historic artefacts. It is forbidden to take photos inside the castle, but it is definitely worth having a look around. Entrance to the castle is included in the photographic tutoring tour package. I plan on leading a 5 x 4 large format camera session in the fantastic gardens of this castle. Here you will take turns to use this camera with my supervision. The object of this session will be for you to narrow your options down and think about the best place in the grounds to take these photos. This camera session will help your composition, focus, depth of field and exposure. You will get 2 sheets of 5 x 4 film each and both sheets will be of the same scene. Don't worry, I will be there to supervise you. If you're tired and you feel like you need a drink after this, don't panic, as our next stop is close by at the Clynelish Distillery. This distillery has beautiful views of the North Sea and the hills to the north. The distillery produces a fruity, waxy, slightly smoky single malt Scotch whisky from six traditional copper stills and is used extensively for blending. We will be participating in the Clynelish Distillery Guided Tour which includes a wee dram of Clynelish 14 Year Old Single Malt. After this, we will return back to our accommodation.

Day Three

Today we will be leaving early at 7am and travelling to the Isle of Skye. This is around 124 miles from Inverness and can take up to three and a half hours. We will stop off at some places along the way, one being the Eilean Donan Castle in Dorniem Kyle of Lochalsh where we will be spending some time photographing this beautiful castle. Then we will continue to travel further into the island where we will stop off for some lunch at one of my recommended cafes. After lunch we will be heading towards Sligachan Bridge which is an enchanting old stone bridge with mountainous scenery surrounding it. We will then commence our journey towards our accommodation. With regards to our accommodation for the Isle of Skye, we must all be in the same area for the next two nights. Feel free to contact me to guide you with this accommodation or if we all agree, I can arrange a lodge or a cottage that we can all stay in under one roof for the next two nights. If I arrange accommodation for all of us, the total price would need to be paid for on the time of booking. Some accommodations may supply breakfast and an evening meal. However if we go for the option of a lodge / cottage then we would need to buy and cook our food and share the cost. We will settle into our accommodation and take a look at the photographs that we have taken so far.

Day Four

Day four will involve a lot of walking and we may need to take a packed lunch with us, which will be provided by me, unless we come across a cafe on the way. First thing in the morning, we will be heading to the Fairy Pools. You will have a golden opportunity to take plenty of great photographs along the way. We will be spending most of the morning here. Later that afternoon, we will be making our way to The Storr. This is a large pinnacle of rock that stands high and can be seen for miles around. After our photography session here, we will be heading back to our accommodation.

Day Five

Today we will be travelling back to Inverness where you will need to reserve your Premier Inn / accommodation for one night so that you can securely catch your flight / train the following day. On our journey back from the Isle of Skye we will be stopping off at a couple of picturesque places where we can stretch our legs and carry on with our photography. As this is our last day, I plan on arriving back in Inverness at a good time to check in at our accommodation. Depending on the time that we have, I'd like to fit in one more trip to the Cairngorms National Park. Here we will find the ancient stone bridge of Carrbridge, also known as 'The Coffin Bridge' as this is one of the oldest stone bridges in Scotland dating back to 1717. In the evening we will be looking at the photographs that we have each taken this week and selecting our favourite 5.
