The next photographic tuition holiday in Dorset is 6th - 8th June 2019 (Three nights).

You are welcome to join me on a three day photographic tuition tour in the beautiful Georgian town of Weymouth, located on the South Coast in the county of Dorset with easy access by train and road (three hours from London Waterloo train station). This Georgian seaside town has a busy harbour, golden beach and plenty of B&Bs, hotels and places to eat and drink. Weymouth is located halfway along the Jurassic coast which is a fantastic place to be positioned in this World Heritage Coastline to take some amazing photographs.

The popular tourist destination of Weymouth has been attracting visitors from all over England since the eighteenth century. This peaceful seaside town has a lot of character and various visitor attractions, not to mention the multiple picturesque opportunities. For example the Jurassic Skyline tower offers great views climbing to 165ft across Weymouth and out into the English Channel. This rotates twice with spectacular views. There are also fantastic views of the Jurassic Coastline from Weymouth Beach. With wide stretches of golden sand and clear waters, it is one of the most magnificent beaches in England. The Radipole Lake is also particularly scenic, it offers the perfect opportunity for some wildlife photography.

After you arrive in Dorset, I have a maximum of 4 available spaces in my car for you to travel with me. Alternatively, you are welcome to follow me in your own transport. In my Dorset Photographic Tutoring Holiday I take a maximum of 4 people per tour.

Please note, this itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions.

Night Beforehand

If we have all arrived, we will have a small gathering at the Beefeater in Weymouth (on-site of the Premier Inn) at 19.30 for us all to get to know each other and for a short informal chat on the practical side of photography, composition, depth of field and shutter speed.

Day One

During the morning we will have a talk on taking photos, focusing on exposure, aperture and depth of field. After this we will make our way over to the famous Durdle Door. Here you will be able to capture Durdle Door’s magnificent rock arch set right on the Jurassic Coast. Further east at Man O’ War Beach, we will visit a massive chalk headland which marks the point in which the soft rocks were joined many years ago where two beaches were merged together leaving Portline Stone outlines. We will then head west for some lunch at a traditional country pub, The Smugglers Inn. After lunch, we will upload some photos to the laptop for a quick preview and discussion. Later on that evening, we will make our way over to Weymouth Harbour for some night photography. Here we will practise the essential use of your tripod and develop our visual skills focusing on composition. We will let our imaginations flow whilst capturing reflections in the water of the harbour.

Day Two

After breakfast we will head over to the ancient Lulworth Castle, this will be a great opportunity to spend all morning here. I will be bringing my 5x4 large format film camera on this day. This will give you a great chance to use this camera with my supervision. We will each be taking two photographs on two separate sheets of 5x4 film with this large format camera. Hopefully this will help you to become a better photographer by intensely studying your image before you take the photo. Using this camera will allow you to frame, adjust and perfect your image more thoughtfully. Unlike digital photos which can be retaken and replaced, you have a limited quantity of film. Therefore, you learn to think more carefully about your image. Exposure and composition must be right before you release the shutter. After a pub lunch, we will then take a leisurely walk along the Natural World Heritage Coastline. Here there will be many opportunities for you to capture some stunning views of Lulworth Cove from the cliffs and from below. After an afternoon of capturing Lulworth Cove, we will head back to Weymouth Town.

Day Three

Optional early morning start around 5am (time dependent on month) to capture sunrise over the Portland Bill Lighthouse. Here you will have the opportunity to take some fantastic photographs of the sun peeping through the clouds at this magical time of day for photographers. This early morning sun and light illuminates the lighthouse beautifully. This will be followed by a brunch at a typically coastal café. I will then be leading a workshop on Photoshop and building a photo storage and back-up system. As this is our last day, it would be nice to meet up in the evening for a drink.

Day Four

Drop off to local railway station if travelling by public transport for your journey back home.

Full payment for the accommodation would need to be paid on day of booking. When you are looking for your accommodation, I would strongly recommend that we all stay in the same town. After researching Dorset, I recommend the town of Weymouth. It is central for our tours and has a variety of options for accommodation and meals. After staying at The Premier Inn in Weymouth I found it clean, comfortable and has an on-site restaurant and bar. I would recommend this.
