The next photographic tuition holiday in Cornwall is 10th - 13th June 2019 (Four nights).

Welcome to my 4 night photographic tuition course in Cornwall. Cornwall is often characterised by its magnificent coastline with 300 miles of cliffs, abundance of fossils, hidden coves and medieval harbours. Every part is accessible by foot.

You will have the chance to discover the natural beauty of Kynance Cove. The contrast between the coves white sandy beach and the green serpentine rock, which is covered with amber coloured moss, is a truly impressive sight. There will be multiple photographic opportunities, when the sunlight hits the sea it turns a dazzling turquoise colour. From Kynance Cove, take a wander along the south west coast path to the UK’s most southerly point, Lizard Point. Here you will find yourself looking onto Lizard Cottage.

In Cornwall, there are endless fishing villages to explore. At Cagwith you will have the opportunity to capture an array of different coloured fishing boats, fishermen hard at work and thatched cottages. Travelling west to Mullion, you will find the magnificent sight of cottages tucked away into the cliffs. Later you can explore Porthleven’s impressive fishing harbour, crab nets, historic buildings and net lofts. Pothleven is known for its traditional Cornish scones and clotted cream shortbreads – this is not to be missed.

There are various landscape photography opportunities at Chapel Porth Beach and South Wheal Frances. These areas are full of tin mine ruins and ivy-coated historic buildings. Why not travel across to St Michaels Mount? It tropical gardens include every shade of green imaginable and its historic castle is very picturesque. Moving to the east of Cornwall you will discover Golithia Falls. Cornwall is not just about golden sand and coves, here you can find a series of spectacular cascades and waterfalls along a section of the River Fowey. No matter what the weather is like, you are bound to get some great shots in this spectacular destination.

Itinerary Brochure cornwall photography lessons by gary atkinson

Please note, this itinerary is subject to change based on weather conditions.

Night Beforehand

If we have all arrived we will have a small gathering at The May Tree Pub in Helston (on-site of the Premier Inn) at 19.30 for us all to get to know each other and for a short informal chat on the practical side of photography, composition, depth of field and shutter speed.

Day One

We will be setting off on the first available boat from Marazion to St Michael’s Mount (closed on Saturdays) at 9.30am. The gardens will open at 10.30am so we will be arriving there beforehand. We will spend a good part of the morning here, and you will have a choice to explore the gardens (£7 pp) or combined castle and gardens (£14 pp). We will be concentrating on capturing the tropical gardens and the view of the historic castle which overlooks Mounts Bay. We will then be travelling up to St Ives where we will have a bite to eat in one of the many eateries that are located in this area. We will spend the afternoon photographing a mixture of the fishing boats, coastline and cobblestone streets.

Day Two

Today we will be heading towards South Wheal Frances – an area that has a large quantity of tin mine ruins and engine houses. This would be a good opportunity to get the 5x4 large format camera out. We will each be taking two photographs on two separate sheets of 5x4 film and hopefully this will help you to become a better photographer by intensely studying your image before you take the photo. Using this film camera will allow you to frame, adjust and perfect your image more thoughtfully. We will then head off to the beautiful National Nature Reserve of Golithia Falls. After this we can stop for a short break at Inkie’s Smokehouse before we make our way back.

Day Three

Optional 5am start to capture sunrise at Polpeor Cove at Lizard Point. Here you will be able to follow the south west coast trail and position yourself for the sunrise shot. We will be spending just over two hours here, however this is optional. Then we will be travelling back to either the fishing village of Porthleven or The Lizard for a group breakfast at 9am. After our breakfast, we will all travel back and spend most of the day photographing Kynance Cove. We will stop off for lunch at the Kynance Cove Café which is based at the bottom of the cove. Towards the late afternoon we will head over to Cagwith, a quaint fishing village where we will continue to develop our photography skills. This will be followed by a visit to the local Cagwith Cove Pub.

Day Four

We will be travelling up to the National Trust area of Bedruthan Steps, this will involve walking along the South West Coast Trail and down 120 steps to the beach. Here you will have an ample opportunity to use your photography skills that you have developed over the last few days. After we have finished this, we will head back to Helston and during the late afternoon we will meet up at The May Tree Pub or a similar location. Here we will have a basic Photoshop workshop focusing on developing raw images, cropping and colour balance. We will also be having a short display of some of your favourite images that you have taken over the week. We will narrow this down to your favourite 4 images per person - your favourite image of each day.

Day Five

Drop off to local railway station if travelling by public transport for your journey back home.

Full payment for the accommodation would need to be paid on day of booking. When you are looking for your accommodation, I would strongly recommend that we all stay in the same town. After researching Cornwall, I recommend the town of Helston. It is central for our tours and has a variety of options for accommodation and meals. After staying at The Premier Inn in Helston I found it clean, comfortable and has an onsite restaurant and bar. I would recommend this.
